Amazon, BBC revive Ripper Street

Amazon has launched its Prime Instant Video streaming service in the UK, previously branded LoveFilm, by linking up with the BBC to revive axed crime drama Ripper Street.

The SVoD service has ordered a third season of the show, which was cancelled by the BBC during its second run in December.

It will be coproduced by Simon Vaughn’s Lookout Point and UK indie Tiger Aspect Productions and be made exclusively available to Prime Instant members first. Amazon has also picked up SVoD rights to Ripper Street’s first two seasons.

The third run will then be broadcast on BBC1 several months after its Prime Instant debut, as well as on BBC America, which is a coproduction partner on the project. The show will be sold internationally by BBC Worldwide (BBCWW).

The u-turn comes after fans campaigned for the show’s revival, which led to the BBC confirming it was looking at alternative funding models to extend the programme’s run – a potential deal with LoveFilm was mooted back in December.

Set in Victorian London, Ripper Street starred Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam Rothenberg as detectives solving grisly crimes.

The show’s return marks the first time a subscription VoD service in the UK has revived a programme. Netflix in the US has already extended crime thriller The Killing into a fourth season after AMC axed the series and it has also brought back cancelled Fox comedy Arrested Development.
