ALSO Productions’ Alexis Durand-Braul and Sophie Lorain on distinctive storytelling

Today we hear from Sophie Lorain and Alexis Durand-Brault, co-heads of ALSO Productions, about their pursuit of distinctive storytelling, two new drama series and the growth of Quebec’s TV industry.

Sophie Lorain is a French-Canadian actress, director and producer, known for roles in TV series including Fortier for Quebec’s TVA network and directing movies such as Heat Wave (Les grandes chaleurs) and Slut in a Good Way (Charlotte a du fun).

She is married to director and cinematographer Alexis Durand-Brault, whose credits include the Heart That Dies Last (C’est le cœur qui meurt en dernier), The Little Queen (La petite reine) and episodes of the TV series La galère and Au secours de Béatrice.

Together the couple run ALSO Productions, which is behind two shows screened at Series Mania in Lille last week. Disobey, for Bell Media streamer Crave, is a true story about a woman struggling against abortion laws, while Mégantic is another real-life drama, this time about a 2013 US railroad oil spill tragedy, and debuted recently on Vidéotron’s Club Illico. Both spoke to Michael Pickard.
