Airey scours US for RTL acquisitions

European broadcast giant RTL Group is reportedly eyeing a move into the US, with former Channel 5 CEO Dawn Airey spearheading the effort.

Airey is currently in the US, hunting for an underperforming cable channel that RTL can takeover and turn into a male-skewing channel along the lines of Dave in the UK, according to a report in British broadsheet The Telegraph.

RTL, which last month branched out into India, following a deal with Reliance Broadcast Network, is said to be keen on channels with low viewing figures, but which operate on US cable and can therefore attract large audiences.

Airey left the UK’s C5 in August after media mogul Richard Desmond bought out the business from RTL. She remained with the Luxembourg-based broadcaster as president of a subsidiary called CLT-UFA in the UK and her remit is now understood to include mergers and acquisitions, as RTL seeks to step up its global presence.
