A+E Studios gets international arm

US cablenets operator and producer A+E Networks is launching an international arm to distribute and finance high-end scripted series, TV events and movies at Mipcom this week.

A+E Studios International will debut in Cannes with just shy of 40 hours of scripted projects for distribution.

That includes six-part factual drama Sons of Liberty and 10-hour series Un-Real. The slate also includes four original TV movies including Whitney (working title) which focuses on the work, relationships and life of the late singer Whitney Houston.

Two projects currently in production – fact-based Gangland Undercover (working title) and The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe – are also included.

The move follows the launch of in-house production outfit A+E Studios in June 2013.

Sean Cohan, executive VP of international for A+E Networks, said: “Last year, A+E Networks announced the formation of A+E Studios to allow our company to take greater control of the scripted content commissioned for our domestic channels, History, A&E and Lifetime.

“Now that we have ownership over these premium dramas, TV events and movies, it made sense to package and market our scripted content under a new umbrella brand.”
