Anthea Petersen becomes regional director for Africa and will be based at the firm’s new Johannesburg office. She will oversee commercial development and marketing for A+E Networks’ local channel portfolio which includes History, Crime + Investigation and Lifetime.

She will also be responsible for opening the Johannesburg office and building the local team, reporting to Bakori Davis, VP of commercial operations at A+E Networks UK, the division that oversees A+E’s activity in Africa.

Petersen has previously worked for local broadcast group DStv Media/M-Net and currently runs her own South Africa-based consultancy.

Davis said Petersen’s appointment would help A+E “work more effectively with our partners and maximise growth opportunities across Africa.”

A+E has been increasing its presence in the region, with entertainment channel Lifetime now available in more than 50 countries across Sub-Saharan African, including Angola and Mozambique, which have a Portuguese feed.

The US channels operator also embarked on its first wholly owned channel operation in Europe in Italy in December 2013 and then took over Singapore-based AETN All Asia Networks by buying out its original joint venture partner Astro Overseas Limited.
