Acorn TV, Channel 5 hand two-season renewal order to detective drama Dalgliesh

Bertie Carvel plays the title role in Dalgliesh

AMC Networks-owned streaming platform Acorn TV and UK broadcaster Channel 5 have renewed detective drama Dalgliesh for an additional two seasons.

The 6×60’ second season is currently filming in Northern Ireland, with Bertie Carvel (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Agatha Christie’s The Pale Horse) reprising his role as chief inspector Adam Dalgliesh.

The show is produced by All3Media-backed New Pictures (Des, The Missing, Cobra), with additional financing coming from Northern Ireland Screen.

Acorn Media Enterprises serves as distributor for both seasons in North America, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Chile and Mexico. London-based distributor All3Media International is handling distribution for the rest of the world.

Set to air in 2023, the second instalment will be based on three of PD James’ bestselling murder mystery novels: Death of An Expert Witness, A Certain Justice and The Murder Room.

Screenwriter and playwright Helen Edmundson (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, An Inspector Calls) will once again serve as lead writer for the second season, with Stewart Harcourt (Maigret, Hearts and Bones) joining the series as writer for the episodes based on A Certain Justice.

Brendan Mullin (Boys From County Hell) is producing the series, with Elaine Pyke, Willow Grylls, Emily Russell and Helen Edmundson serving as executive producers for New Pictures. Series directors for season two include Andy Tohill, Ryan Tohill and Geoff Sax.

The third season, set to begin filming next year, will continue to be based on James’ novels.
