ABC, Unbelievable book into Grand Hotel

ABC in the US has added a drama from Eva Longoria’s Unbelievable Entertainment to its development slate that is based on a Spanish scripted series from Bambú Producciones.

Grand Hotel, from Unbelievable and ABC Studios, has the latter’s comedy-drama scribe Brian Tanen attached to write the adaptation. Set in a Miami Beach hotel, it follows the exploits of the family who run it and the secrets they hide.

It is based on the Spanish original Gran Hotel, which was produced by Bambú and ran for three seasons on Spanish network Antena 3. Germany’s Beta Film distributes the format and finished programme internationally.

The Spanish original was set in 1905 and debuted in Spain in 2011. It follows a young man who is determined to discover the truth about his sister’s disappearance from the hotel that employed her.

Tanen, Longoria and fellow Unbelievable founder Ben Spector are attached as exec producers on the US adaptation, alongside Beta Film duo Oliver Bachert and Christian Gockel.

An adaptation for ABC was in the works last season but had a different writer attached, while Mexican broadcaster Televisa has also previously picked up remake rights.

Bambú is behind an array of scripted series including Netflix’s first Spanish original Cable Girls and fashion drama Velvet Colección for pay TV operator Movistar.
