ABC orders Black-ish spin-off

Kenya Barris’s Black-ish

US broadcast network ABC has extended comedy Black-ish into a sixth season and ordered a spin-off from the series.

Like Black-ish, Mixed-ish is from ABC Studios. It will focus on Black-ish character Rainbow Johnson’s experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the 1980s. Peter Saji will executive produce and write alongside Kenya Barris, who created the original series.

Black-ish, which debuted in 2014 and stars Anthony Anderson, follows an upper-middle-class African-American family led by Andre Johnson and Rainbow Johnson. It has previously spawned a spin-off in the shape of Grown-ish, which returns for the second half of its second season on US network Freeform this summer.

Last year, Barris signed a multimillion-dollar, multi-year production deal with global streamer Netflix.
