ABC hit medical drama The Good Doctor to end with seventh season

US broadcaster ABC announced medical drama The Good Doctor will end with its seventh season

Medical drama The Good Doctor will end with its seventh season, US broadcaster ABC announced on Thursday.

The new season of the Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature-produced series is set to debut on February 20.

The show, based on a Korean scripted format of the same name, has been a consistent ratings performer for ABC since it debuted in 2017.

It stars Freddie Highmore as a young autistic surgeon with savant syndrome, who moves from a quiet country life to join the surgical unit at the prestigious San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital.

A spin-off series, The Good Lawyer, aired as a pilot last year on ABC but the network ultimately declined to order it to series.

The end of The Good Doctor comes a month after ABC confirmed that Station 19, the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off following a group of firefighters, was also ending with its seventh season.

“The Good Doctor has been a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye,” said co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman, and exec producer Erin Gunn.

“We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve. Thank you, Sony; thank you, ABC; thank you all.”
