ABC bags Bacon, Lambert’s Hustler

MIPCOM: US network ABC has ordered a gameshow format created by UK firm Studio Lambert and British TV and radio host Richard Bacon.

The Disney-owned broadcaster has placed an initial eight-episode order for “mind-bending” quiz The Hustler, which will be hosted by Craig Ferguson (The Late Late Show).

The format sees five contestants compete to win a cash prize by answering questions, while one player – ‘The Hustler’ – already knows the answers and must remain undetected if they want to keep the money for themselves.

Production is set to begin later this year, it was announced at Mipcom in Cannes. Studio Lambert is behind formats including Gogglebox and Undercover Boss.

“It’s rare and exciting to have a mystery-based gameshow that employs viewers and contestants to tap into their sleuth skills,” said Rob Mills, ABC Entertainment’s senior VP of alternative series, specials and late night.

“This fun new format is the perfect addition to our dynamic gameshow line-up, and Craig’s unmatched wit and humour make him the ideal host. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome him back to ABC.”

Studio Lambert CEO Stephen Lambert added: “With Craig in the driving seat, the comedic beats of this game are very much to the fore. We think ABC viewers will laugh a lot but also be shocked and surprised by the twists of this game, which invites contestants and viewers to play detective solving a whodunit or, in this case, a ‘whoisit.’”

The Hustler is produced by All3Media-backed Studio Lambert. Studio Lambert USA exec VP Jack Burgess, creative director Tim Harcourt and Susan House all executive produce alongside Bacon and Lambert.

In related news, Studio Lamber has partnered with UK presenting duo Ant and Dec’s Mitre Television for car competition Street Car Showdown.

BBC2 has commissioned a non-transmission pilot that will see two rival teams tasked with converting ordinary second-hand cars into racing machines in just 10 days and with a limited budget, before competing in a series of challenges.

Street Car Showdown (w/t) is a coproduction between Studio Lambert and Mitre Television. Mike Cotton and Ian Carre are executive producing for Studio Lambert alongside Matt Wilkinson from Mitre Television. Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnnelly are creative consultants.
