Abacus adds The Masked Dancer

The Masked Dancer

Amcomri-owned UK distributor Abacus Media Rights has picked up global sales rights to the UK version of new entertainment format The Masked Dancer.

The news comes after Abacus was named as the global distribution partner for sister show The Masked Singer UK, with both deals excluding sales in UK.

The UK version of The Masked Dancer will debut on commercial broadcaster ITV later this year, based on the US programme of the same name that premiered on Fox at the end of 2020.

The show follows the same format as The Masked Singer but centres on dancing rather than singing. It features disguised celebrities perform dance routines in front of a panel of famous judges, who must guess who is behind the mask.

The judges for the UK version will be Oti Mabuse, Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall and Mo Gilligan. UK comedian Joel Dommett, who presents ITV’s version of The Masked Singer, will host the 7×90’ season, which is being produced by Argonon-owned Bandicoot Scotland.

Abacus has sold the UK edition of The Masked Singer to Virgin Ireland, Canadian gameshow network Game TV, BBC Brit in South Africa and Icelandic channel Stöð 2. The singing format was originally shown in South Korea from 2015, having been developed by local broadcaster MBC.
