A24 signs co-financing, production deal with ex-Disney exec Peter Rice

Peter Rice, who served as Walt Disney Television’s chairman of entertainment until he was dramatically ousted a year ago, has returned with a production and co-financing deal with US-based studio A24.

Under the deal, A24, which is behind properties including HBO series Euphoria and Oscar-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once, will co-finance and produce TV and film projects with the high-profile Disney and Fox alumnus.

The non-exclusive deal marks the first time that Rice has been an independent producer.

The news comes a little less than a year after Rice was ousted by Disney’s then CEO Bob Chapek in a move that stunned Hollywood.

Prior to his exit from Disney, Rice had oversight of Disney+, Hulu and Star and its cable and broadcast networks, in addition to brands and assets such as 20th Television, ABC Entertainment, ABC News, ABC Signature, Disney Branded Television, Freeform, FX, Hulu Originals, National Geographic and Onyx Collective.

“I am incredibly excited to be an independent producer and could not be more thrilled to begin that journey in partnership with A24,” said Rice.

“They have built Hollywood’s most vibrant, fearless, and creative studio. The fact they made it out of whole cloth in a decade is a testament to their exquisite taste, razor-sharp business acumen and infectious enthusiasm for creativity and artists.

“I have been blessed to work with so many amazing creators as an executive and cannot wait to start producing provocative, meaningful and entertaining movies and TV shows with creators I admire and respect.”
