London-based 3DD Productions is funding and distributing a feature documentary to mark what would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday.

Princess Diana: Who Do You Think She Was? (1×60’) looks at the Princess of Wales’ ancestry dating back to the 18th century, and will be delivered on June 1 this year.

Born Diana Spencer, the princess became part of the British royal family when she married Prince Charles in 1981. They divorced in 1996, and Diana died in a car crash the following year.

Contributors to the show include historians Tessa Dunlop, Sarah Gristwood, James Falkner, Dr Luke Blaxill, Dr Anna Whitelock and Dr Joanna Lewis.

3DD Entertainment, 3DD’s distribution arm, has commissioned the hour-long special from 3DD’s production wing. Lyndy Saville, head of documentaries at 3DD, is producer, while Will Simpson is the writer and director. 3DD CEO Dominic Saville is exec producing.

Saville said: “The subject of ancestry has become a global fascination and we wanted to make a programme that would explore this. Princess Diana is of interest as a British icon and the next two years mark important anniversaries, both of her birthday and the 25th anniversary of her death in 2022.”
