32 Flavors, Box to Box explore NWSL off-season in Alexis Ohanian-funded docuseries

The Offseason follows US women soccer players in Miami

Alex Baskin’s banner 32 Flavors and Drive to Survive prodco Box to Box Films are teaming up with tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian and women’s soccer star Midge Purce on an unscripted series set during the off-season of the US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

The 6×30’ project, which is described as a crossover between a sports docuseries and a reality show, will follow 11 top NWSL players as they spend two weeks in Miami training, partying and living together under one roof.

The Offseason is created by Purce and fully financed by Ohanian’s Seven Seven Six. Production is already underway on the project, which the producers say aims to “subvert TV’s traditional production model.”

In addition to Purce, the project will also feature Maria Sanchez, Lo’eau LaBonta, Michelle Alozie, Taylor Smith, Nikki Stanton, Ally Watt, Taryn Torres, Paige Nielsen and Ify Onumonu.

Baskin, the former president of Evolution Media whose unscripted credits include Vanderpump Rules and several iterations of The Real Housewives, launched 32 Flavors last year. Box to Box, meanwhile, has emerged as a fastest-rising prodco with its sports-focused docuseries Drive to Survive, Break Point and Full Swing.

“All of the most successful reality TV shows feature women, and with Midge’s vision and these acclaimed producers’ execution, everyone is going to realise women’s sports was an obvious vehicle all along. Someone just had to be first,” said Ohanian, who is also a lead investor in the NWSL team Angel City FC.

Baskin, who serves as CEO at 32 Flavors, added that he believes this format “represents an entirely new lane of programming,” while Box to Box co-founder Paul Martin called the show “the ultimate crossover of premium sports doc and high-end reality, featuring some of the most exciting, new, hot-ticket sports stars on the planet.”

In addition to Purce and Ohanian, executive producers on the series include Alex Baskin, Jeff Festa and Shari Levine for 32 Flavors, and Martin and James Gay-Rees for Box to Box Films. Other exec producers include Jordan Jenkins and showrunner Danielle Medina.
