20th Television signs Elgin James to new deal as FX brings Mayans MC back

Biker drama series Mayans MC

Disney-owned US cablenet FX has renewed biker drama series Mayans MC for a fifth season and producer 20th Television has tied the show’s creator Elgin James to a new overall deal.

The series, which premiered in 2018, takes place in the same fictional universe as Sons of Anarchy, focusing on the Mayans Motorcycle Club. Season five will premiere in 2023.

It was co-created by Kurt Sutter and James who are executive producers on the show. The series is produced by 20th Television and FX Productions.

Making the renewal announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, it was also revealed that 20th Television has signed Elgin James to a new multi-year overall deal.

“Elgin is a visionary leader who has managed the nearly impossible task of being in multiple places at one time as director, showrunner and writer on his brilliant Mayans MC,” said Karey Burke, president of 20th Television.

“He’s also a passionate champion of emerging voices and young storytellers both in front and behind the camera, which is another reason we love being in business with him. There’s virtually nothing he can’t do and we’re grateful to have him at 20th.”

James was a fixture in Boston’s hardcore punk scene and a member of a multi-ethnic national street gang that targeted neo-Nazi skinheads. After spending a decade and a half in the gang, he left for Los Angeles where he was shepherded by the Sundance Institute Feature Film programme and given the tools of filmmaking to learn how to express himself through art instead of violence.

James, along with Stephen Merchant, is also co-creator of the Amazon/BBC series The Outlaws.
