Netflix to stream Spotify story

The founding tale of streaming music giant Spotify will be a Netflix original scripted series after the global streamer partnered with Banijay Group-owned Yellow Bird UK.

The as-yet-untitled limited series is inspired by the book Spotify Untold by authors Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud, both business reporters at Swedish Dagens Industri.

Telling the tale of the secretive Swedish start-up that evolved into Spotify, the series centres around young Swedish tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek and his partner Martin Lorentzon, who revolutionised a whole industry by offering free and legal streamed music around the world.

Yellow Bird UK will develop and produce the Swedish- and English-language series after optioning the screen rights to the story earlier this year. It is also currently working with Netflix on Young Wallander.

Per-Olav Sørensen (Quicksand) will be directing, Berna Levin (Young Wallander) will serve as executive producer and Luke Franklin will serve as producer.

Tesha Crawford, director of international originals, Northern Europe, at Netflix, said: “The founding tale of Spotify is a great example of how a local story can have a global impact.”

Sørensen added: “It is an ongoing fairytale in modern history about how Swedish whiz-kids changed the music industry forever. The story is truly exciting and challenging… because the Spotify story has not ended yet – it is still running with high speed and will probably change while we work on the project.”
