Netflix to serve up British Bake Off in US

The Great British Bake Off moved from the BBC to Channel 4 in the UK

Global streaming giant Netflix has picked up rights to existing and future seasons of UK cooking show The Great British Bake Off.

The show, which has spawned numerous remakes around the world, is produced by UK-based Love Productions and debuted on the BBC in the UK before moving to Channel 4.

Despite the move, BBC Studios still sells the finished programme and holds international format rights outside North America.

Netflix will now be the new home of first-run US airings of the UK programme, which is known in America as The Great British Baking Show. Local first-run rights previously belonged to pubcaster PBS, although Netflix had had some old episodes available.

Bake Off sees contestants compete in a series of baking challenges to impress an expert jury, with weekly eliminations.

C4’s first season aired last year, fronted by new hosts Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding alongside new judge Prue Leith, It will arrive on Netflix on August 31.

The next season, which will start on C4 on Tuesday, will be made available to Netflix’s US subscribers later this year and the yet-to-be-filmed third run is set for 2019.

Yesterday Netflix revealed it had greenlit an ambitious cooking format with a pair of showrunners from MasterChef US.
