Netflix to serve Osaka docuseries

Naomi Osaka reached top place in the world singles rankings

Netflix is to develop a docuseries following Japanese Grand Slam tennis star Naomi Osaka.

The as-yet untitled series will look at Osaka’s 2019 season in which she became the first Asian player to reach the number one singles ranking after winning the 2018 US Open and coming runner up at the Australian Open last year.

The series will follow Osaka as she tours and prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as telling her coming-of-age story.

The documentary will be produced by Netlfix alongside Uninterrupted, the prodco founded by basketball star LeBron James and Maverick Carter, and US prodco Film 45. Garrett Bradley will direct.

Osaka said: “To be able to tell my story and let people in during this big year, working with a team that really understands me, has been a rewarding experience. It won’t look like a traditional sports documentary and I’m so excited to share it with everyone.”
