The US SVoD service is launching a specially edited eight-part version of 2012 movie Gangs of Wasseypur.

During a panel session in Goa on Monday, the film’s director Anurag Kashyap said the move “reflects how digital distribution can play a role in expanding a film’s audience after its theatrical release.”

The North American rights to Gangs of Wasseypur are held by Cinelicious, which worked with digital rights aggregator Film Karavan and producer Guneet Monga on the deal.

The series will stream on Netflix in the first week of December, subtitled in English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese.

Netflix is aiming to launch in India next year with a raft of local content as it looks to increase its global subscriber base of 62 million. Rival streamer Amazon is also looking to enter the territory.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently said the company was looking to produce Bollywood content in time for the launch.
