Netflix teams with Oya in Turkey

Netflix has partnered with Berkun Oya, the creator behind Turkish drama series End, on an eight-part social thriller series set in Istanbul.

Written, created and directed by the Oya, the as-yet-untitled project will be produced by Ali Farkhonde and Nisan Ceren Gocen on behalf of Krek Film.

Principal photography began yesterday on the series that stars an ensemble cast including Oyku Karayel, Fatih Artman, Funda Eryigit, Alican Yucesoy, Tulin Ozen, Defne Kayalar, Settar Tanriogen and Bige Onal.

The series is expected to launch globally in 2020. It tells the story of a group of unique characters from dramatically different socio-cultural backgrounds meeting in startling circumstances in Istanbul.

Oya founded Krek, one of the most influential contemporary theatre companies in Istanbul, and has received many awards as a playwright and director both domestically and internationally.

The first feature film written and directed by Oya, Happy New Year: London, was released in 2007 and he went on to create and write many television dramas.

These End was licensed to five countries as a format and its original version was sold in 17 countries internationally. Oya also produced Turkey’s first digital series Innocent.

In related news, Netflix has announced two films originating out of the Nordics. Red Dot comes from Sweden and will be produced by SF Studios, while Cadaver is from Norway and will be produced by Motion Blur.

The two will premiere exclusively on Netflix. Netflix has also acquired global rights to the Danish feature film Shadows In My Eyes, produced by Miso Film.

Funded by the Danish Film Institute, the film will have a theatrical release in Denmark followed by the Netflix global launch outside of Denmark. SF Studios will distribute the film.
