MIPTV: Netflix has acquired ITV’s new Anna Friel crime drama Marcella, written by The Bridge creator Hans Rosenfeldt.

The US subscription VoD service has picked up the worldwide streaming rights to the thriller following a deal with distributor Cineflix Rights, which has brought the drama to MipTV.

Marcella, which premieres on ITV tonight, is produced by Buccaneer Media and was co-created by Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder.

It follows a police officer who returns to a London murder squad after a 12-year break to take on an unsolved case from 10 years earlier.

Netflix will launch the thriller globally on July 1 outside of the UK and Ireland.

“We got involved with the series early on in the process to gain the opportunity to bring Hans’ great storytelling to our members around the world – right after its initial UK broadcast on ITV,” Larry Tanz, VP of global TV at Netflix, said in a statement.

Wonder_kidsThis marks Rosenfeldt’s first drama for the UK following the success of The Bridge, widely tipped to be commissioned for a fourth season by Sweden’s SVT and Denmark’s DR.
