Netflix strikes Bollywood partnership

Netflix has entered into a long-term partnership with Bollywood heavyweight Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment.

The deal will see Dharmatic Entertainment create a range of new fiction and non-fiction series and films exclusively for the streamer.

Johar is one of the biggest names in Indian entertainment and has directed eight major films in Bollywood as well serving as producer. He also hosts the popular talkshow Koffee with Karan.

Netflix first worked with Johar on the feature film Lust Stories and is also involved in two upcoming Netflix films: Ghost Stories, as director, and Guilty, produced by Dharmatic Entertainment.

The streaming giant said it chose to work with Johar because he has an innate sense of what people care about and a unique way of telling stories that are universal but also authentically reflect Indian society.

“With its unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach, Netflix provides a fearless space for creators,” Johar said. “I’m super-excited about the projects we already have in development and the limitless possibilities ahead.

“To create universal stories from India that the world discovers is an incredible and unprecedented opportunity.”

Dharmatic Entertainment is the digital arm ofn Indian production house Dharma Productions.

“We’re excited about the immense storytelling possibilities ahead. With Netflix as the new storytelling home for Dharmatic Entertainment, I have the highest hopes for what we can do together,” said Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions.

“Our vision is to create differentiated stories across diverse genres, and we can’t wait to craft and usher many more remarkable series and films into the world with Netflix.”
