Netflix steers original motor series

Supercar competition show Fastest Car is set for a second season

Global streamer Netflix has commissioned two new car series as well as renewing its supercar competition show Fastest Car for a second season.

Car Masters: Rust to Riches is an eight-episode series produced by LA-based indie Mak Pictures. Executive producers are Mark Kadin, Will Ehbrecht, Rob Hammersley, Michael Lutz, John Stokel and Scott Popjes.

The show sees custom movie car builder Mark Towle turn rusty wrecks into gleaming masterpieces as he carries out upgrades with his team at Gotham Garage. It launches on September 14.

Hyperdrive is a 10-episode series produced by LA-based prodcos Whalerock Industries and Charlize Theron’s firm Denver & Delilah Productions, with Aaron Catling attached to showrun.

Catling will also exec produce alongside Theron, Lloyd Braun, Chris Cowan, Beth Kono and AJ Dix.

The show is a high-stakes tournament series where daring drivers from across the globe compete for glory across a larges automotive obstacle course. It is currently shooting in Rochester, New York and launches in 2019.

Netflix has also renewed Fastest Car for a seven-episode second season. The series is produced by Condé Nast Entertainment with showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Finn attached.

Al Edgington, Joe LaBracio and Scott Weintrob are also executive producers and the show sees drivers of exotic supercars go up against deceptively fast ‘sleeper’ cars.

It was the streamer’s first global original motor series and goes into production on its second run later this year for a 2019 launch.

Netflix previously announced a 10-episode Formula 1 documentary series following the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship to be released in 2019. The programme is being executive produced by James Gay Rees (Senna) and Paul Martin for Box to Box Films, with Sophie Todd as showrunner.
