Netflix, Sky, BBC clean up at C21 awards

Winners gather with their C21 International Drama Awards

CONTENT LONDON: Global streaming giant Netflix, European satcaster Sky and UK pubcaster the BBC were involved in nine of the winning projects at C21’s annual International Drama Awards this evening.

Netflix had a hand in four of the projects honoured, including Ozark, which was named Best Returning Drama; Black Mirror, whose USS Callister episode won Best TV Movie; and GLOW, which took Best Returning Comedy Drama. Ozark’s Jason Bateman won Best Male Performance.

The Best Casting award went to King Lear, which aired on BBC2, while fellow BBC series Killing Eve won Best English Language Drama and Best Female Performance for star Jodie Comer.

Sky went home with the Best Miniseries gong for Patrick Melrose, while HBO’s Barry, which Sky airs in the UK, was named Best Comedy Drama.

There were awards, too, for Facebook Watch, which won best Digital Shortform Drama for its adaptation of Skam, and Danish pubcaster DR, which won Best Non-English-Language Drama for Ride Upon the Storm.

StudioCanal TV MD Rola Bauer picked up the Editor’s Choice award from C21’s David Jenkinson in recognition of her 30-year career in the business.

Parasomnia by Jan Smith was announced as the winner of the Drama Series Script Competition. In the Drama Series Pitch the audience vote went to Blackout from Lagardère Studios and jonnydepony. The jury winner was Snow Angels from Happy Ending Film
