Netflix readies Nina Simone doc

Netflix is preparing a feature documentary on the late singer-songwriter Nina Simone to premiere on its service in 2015.

Produced by RadicalMedia and directed by Liz Garbus (Love, Marilyn), What Happened, Miss Simone? will be available in all Netflix territories next year.

The doc has been made in cooperation with the singer’s estate and offers never-before-heard recordings from the last three decades as Simone tells her life story to interviewers. Throught the recordings, Garbus will attempt to tell Simone’s story in her own words.

The film will also include rare concert and archive footage.

Justin Wilkes, president of media and entertainment at RadicalMedia, will produce alongside Garbus and Amy Hobby.

Netflix first made its move into factual programming in 2013, picking up the rights to Egyptian protest movement doc The Square.
