Netflix preps Catedral del Mar follow-up

La Catedral del Mar (Cathedral of the Sea) was part-funded by Netflix

Global streaming giant Netflix is in production 0n Barcelona-set drama Los Hederos de la Tierra (Heirs of the Land), a follow-up to La Catedral del Mar (Cathedral of the Sea).

The series is based on the novels by Ildefonso Falcones, as was La Catedral del Mar, which aired on Antena 3 and TV3 in Spain before reaching Netflix.

Netflix will have exclusive first-window rights to Los Hederos De La Tierra for 12 months, after which the drama it will also be available for Antena 3 owner Atresmedia and TV3 for three months.

Los Hederos de la Tierra is directed by Jordi Frades. Its main cast consists of Yon González, Elena Rivera, Rodolfo Sancho, Michelle Jenner, María Rodríguez, Pere Arquillué, Manel Sans, Mercedes León and Natalia Sánchez.

Frades, director of the prodco behind the project, Diagonal TV, said: “I am very excited to return to this universe that is so special to me. The new characters are wonderful and the story is exciting.

“Working with Michelle Jenner and Rodolfo Sancho again is a pleasure and a luxury. I have long wanted to work with Yon González and Elena Rivera. I think they have extraordinary talent and I hope the public will enjoy all this work as much as or more than La Catedral del Mar.

The plot follows a 12-year-old boy in medieval Barcelona who struggles to fulfil his dream of becoming a shipbuilding craftsman.
