Netflix Oz offers trial with Optus

Australia’s second largest telco will offer new and re-contracting customers six months’ subscription to Netflix’s Australian service as part of broadband or mobile packages.

The offer from Optus, which is owned by Asian telco the SingTel Group, will start on Netflix’s launch date of March 24 and run until July 5.

As foreshadowed by C21, the US streaming giant typically arranges a six-month free trial with one major telco in each territory.

Optus is also giving customers a three-month Netflix sub when they purchase any prepaid phone or mobile broadband device.

Customers who subscribe to Fetch TV, an OTT service controlled by Malaysian pay TV company Astro All Asia Networks, will be able to access Netflix via Fetch’s second-generation set-top box.

There is a catch: Optus broadband and mobile customers will need to sign a two-year contract to trial Netflix for six months.

However, there will be no metering charges to stream the service for fixed home broadband customers from April 17.
