Netflix orders second South African original

SVoD giant Netflix has commissioned its second South African drama, following on from last year’s order of secret agent series Queen Sono.

Nosipho Dumisa

Blood & Water, which is due to start production later this year for a 2020 release, is a teen drama about a young woman uncovering her family’s past and getting through the challenging task of attending South African high school.

The series will be helmed by Nosipho Dumisa, who has won acclaim for her feature film Nommer 37 (Number 37), and produced by local prodco Gambit Films, the outfit she works under.

Dumisa brings the production team from Nommer 37 to Blood & Water, with directors Daryne Joshua and Travis Taute writing and co-directing, CEO Bradley Joshua and Benjamin Overmeyer producing and post-production chief Simon Beesley as lead editor.

Netflix greenlit fellow South African series Queen Sono at the end of 2018. Starring The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’s Pearl Thusi, the show is due to launch globally this year.

Kelly Luegenbiehl, VP of international originals for Europe, Turkey and Africa at Netflix, said she hoped the new drama would appeal to young adults not just in South Africa but around the world and that the two series would usher in further projects in Africa.
