Netflix orders Magic from Millar

US streaming giant Netflix has revealed its next series adapted from a comic by Mark Millar, whose publishing house it acquired in 2017.

Mark Millar

The Magic Order follows a group of five families of magicians entrusted to keep the world safe from supernatural problems. By day, the families live normal lives as neighbours, friends and co-workers, but by night they release their powers and must fight the evil trying to destroy them – with the order’s members being targeted and picked off one by one.

Millar is best known for his work on comics including The Sensational Spider-Man and Ultimate Fantastic Four. His comic book publishing company Millarworld was bought by Netflix two years ago.

The Magic Order is the first comic to be released by Millarworld since that acquisition, with the first of the six comics in the series released last June.

Millar will exec produce the Netflix series, alongside James Wan (Aquaman, Furious 7) through his Atomic Monster prodco and Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking, Sierra Burgess is a Loser). Wan will direct the first episode and Beer will serve as showrunner/writer for the whole series. Michael Clear will also exec produce, with Rob Hackett as co-exec producer.

Netflix announced its first adaptations of Millarworld comics last year, including a screen version of Jupiter’s Legacy from Steven DeKnight.
