Netflix moves in with Resident Evil

The Resident Evil game spawned a movie franchise starting in 2002

Streaming giant Netflix is expanding its drama slate by developing a drama based on action horror franchise Resident Evil.

Germany’s Constantin Film, which was behind the Resident Evil movies, is working on the proposed show although no showrunner is yet attached.

The series will be set in the same world as the movies, according to US trade Deadline which broke the news, and will focus on the mysterious Umbrella Corporation and a deadly virus outbreak.

Resident Evil began life as a video game, to which Constantin acquired movie adaptation rights in 1997. It then turned the IP into a series of movies that have made more than US$1.2bn.

The original Resident Evil feature debuted in 2002 and was followed by six movies including Resident Evil: Apocalypse in 2004. The latest instalment was Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2016.
