Netflix has launched its subscription video-on-demand service in Japan today as it continues to expand its global footprint.

Netflix Japan launches with a selection of Japanese TV series and films, as well as original shows such as Marco Polo, Marvel’s Daredevil and Academy Award-nominated documentary Virunga.

The service, which teamed up with mobile provider SoftBank Corp for launch, rolls out to a potential 36 million Japanese broadband households and follows Netflix’s expansion into Australia and New Zealand in March.

The company last week announced a Japanese original series based on Naoki Matayoshi’s novel Hibana, which will premiere globally in 2016.

Amazon is launching its video streaming service in Japan next month to directly rival Netflix in the Asian territory.
