Netflix loads up for Oz, NZ launch

Netflix is continuing to acquire both exclusive and non-exclusive Australian and international content for its Australasian service, which launches on March 28.

The US-based streamer has secured exclusive rights to two shows from ABC Commercial, the sales arm of the Aussie pubcaster: Chris Lilley’s comedy Jonah from Tonga and Serangoon Road, which was HBO Asia’s first locally commissioned primetime drama.

Netflix also has non-exclusive rights to other ABC shows including Rake, Redfern Now, Upper Middle Bogan, The Time of Our Lives, Janet King, Jack Irish and Crownies.

The deal also covers Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries (Australia only), Lilley’s Ja’mie: Private School Girl, Summer Heights High and We Can Be Heroes, as well as kids’ shows Angelina Ballerina, Barney, Bob The Builder, Sesame Street, The Wiggles and Thomas the Tank Engine.

Last December subscription VoD rival Stan announced a non-exclusive deal with ABC Commercial encompassing much of the same content.

Among the Netflix exclusives that will be available at launch are season three of House of Cards (Australia only), Marco Polo, Bloodline and Marvel’s Daredevil.

The platform also has rights in Australia to first-run Disney titles including Frozen and Planes; Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Saving Mr Banks and Muppets Most Wanted, shared with pay TV operator Foxtel.

The Disney agreement also includes Australian and New Zealand rights to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Maleficent and Big Hero 6, Cars, Monsters Inc, Up, Lost, Jake and the Never, Tangled and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

On Tuesday, Netflix confirmed it had taken streaming rights to Roadshow Entertainment’s extensive film library and to TV dramas Broadchurch and The Tunnel.
