Netflix lights up Firefly, Murphy original

US streamer Netflix has ordered a scripted series based on the novel Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.

Ryan Murphy

The 10-episode series of the same name follows the lives of two girls who become inseparable best friends over three decades, sharing all aspects of their lives. However, when a betrayal fractures their bond, the two go their separate ways and reconciliation looks uncertain.

Maggie Friedman (No Tomorrow, Witches of East End) will serve as writer, showrunner and exec producer alongside Stephanie Germain and Hannah. The adaptation will be the third novel by Hannah to enter production, following on from TriStar Pictures’ The Nightingale and The Great Alone.

In related news, Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has been given a straight-to-series order for his first Netflix original since he joined the streamer in a multimillion-dollar overall deal last year.

Announcing the news on his Instagram page, Murphy said the show, dubbed Hollywood, would begin principal photography this summer.

Although he shared few details about the series, he said it would be a “love letter to the Golden Age of Tinseltown.” It has been co-created with his long-term collaborator and Glee alum Ian Brennan.
