Netflix goes to war, finds The One

The Liberator is being produced in Trioscope Enhanced Hybrid Animation

SVoD giant Netflix has ordered an animated drama series about a true story from the Second World War and a science-fiction drama based on a novel by John Marrs.

Created by Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, The Fugitive), The Liberator focuses on the exploits of US Army officer Felix Sparks and his infantry unit as they fight for more than 500 days to help liberate Europe.

The four-part series is based on the book The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey by Alex Kershaw. It follows Sparks and his men in the National Guard Unit from the invasion in Italy to the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp.

US production outfits A+E Studios and Unique Features are producing the drama in partnership with Atlanta-based animation studio School of Humans.

Bob Shaye, Michael Lynne and Sarah Victor will exec produce for Unique Features alongside A+E Studios’ Barry Jossen and School of Humans’ LC Crowley, Grzegorz Jonkajtys, Brandon Barr and Mark Apen.

The series will be the first to be produced in Trioscope Enhanced Hybrid Animation, an innovative patent-pending technology that blends state-of-the-art CGI and live-action performance, making the animation as true to life as possible. The tech was developed by Jonkajtys and Crowley.

Meanwhile, Netflix has also commissioned 10-part sci-fi series The One based on the novel by Marrs.

The drama is set in a world where a DNA test can find the ideal partner who you are genetically predisposed to fall in love with.

Marrs’ provocative novel ponders the question of whether science can sort out the question sometimes asked by those in relationships: what if there is someone better out there?

The One is produced by UK outfit Urban Myth Films in association with StudioCanal. The series was created by Urban Myth co-company director Howard Overman. Fellow co-company directors Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy will exec produce with Overman, who also serves as writer.
