Netflix gets Entrapped with RUV, ZDF

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson in Trapped

Netflix is working on a sequel to Nordic noir series Trapped with public broadcasters in Iceland and Germany.

From Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, Entrapped is currently in production in Iceland and will launch on the streamer in 2021.

The series stars Trapped duo Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Ilmur Kristjánsdóttir alongside Danish actor Thomas Bo Larsen (Festen, Follow the Money), and is set two years after the second season of the original show.

Entrapped follows the police duo played by Ólafsson and Kristjánsdóttir as they get drawn into a war in the remote Icelandic highlands, where two rival groups fight over specific pieces of land for very different reasons.

Written by Clive Bradley, Rannveig Jónsdóttir, Davíð Már Stefánsson and Sigurjón Kjartansson, it is produced by RVK Studios and coproduced by RUV in Iceland and ZDF in Germany.

Executive producer and creative director Kormákur, who is already working with Netflix on the streamer’s original series Katla, said: “Trapped is the most successful TV series in Iceland’s history and I am in no doubt that relaunching it as Entrapped with Netflix around the world will take it even further.

“The show will keep on tackling crimes in Iceland through its unique setting, bringing stories of our beloved main characters and their search for justice in a country deeply rooted in its traditions.”

Lina Bronéus, director of coproductions and acquisitions, Netflix Northern Europe, added: “Trapped has gripped viewers across the globe and has shown that great stories can come from anywhere.”

In related news, Netflix has confirmed Space Force, its big-budget sitcom from The Office duo Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, has been renewed for a second season.
