Netflix falls under Disenchantment’s spell

Disenchantment follows a young princess and her two oddball companions

SVoD giant Netflix has renewed The Simpsons creator Matt Groening’s medieval animated comedy Disenchantment for a three further seasons over the next three years.

The original 20-episode season was ordered last year, with the first 10 episodes rolling out this August. The second set of shows from the first order will land next year, while the 20-episode S2 will come to the streamer in 2020 and 2021.

The fantasy series is set in a crumbling medieval kingdom and follows the misadventures of a hard-drinking young princess, her feisty elf companion and her personal demon. Along the way, the oddball trio encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps and plenty of human idiots.

The series is produced by Groening’s The ULULU Company for Netflix, while animation is handled by Rough Draft Studios, which managed Futurama, another of Groening’s animated series. Groening exec produces along with Josh Weinstein.

Although Netflix is secretive about viewing figures, ratings analyst Nielsen suggested that over four million people tuned into the opening episode in the first three days of its launch. Reviews between critics and fans alike have been mixed but leaning towards positive.
