Netflix, DreamWorks prep more originals

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation (DWA) are teaming up again for multiple original series based on current and library IP from the latter’s catalogue.

She-Ra: Princess of Power debuted in 1985

The slate includes spin-offs from DWA’s animated films such as Trolls, The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants, as well as a reboot of 1980s property She-Ra.

The programming will arrive on the streaming platform in 2018. It marks the latest agreement between Netflix and the US studio since they partnered for the streamer’s first children’s original, Turbo: Fast, in 2013 and agreed an output deal later that year.

Since 2013, DWA Television and Netflix have released 12 original series, including Dragons: Race to the Edge, All Hail King Julien, Spirit Riding Free and Dinotrux.

The latest DWA series include DreamWorks Trolls: The Beat Goes On!, which will premiere exclusively on Netflix in the US, Canada, Latin America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the Nordics, Benelux and France next month.

She-Ra, meanwhile, comes from author and executive producer Noelle Stevenson and is a modern take on the 1980s series about a warrior princess.

The Boss Baby: Back in Business is a spin-off from the recent feature film The Boss Baby, Harvey Street Kids follows a group of friends and their adventures growing up together, and The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants is based on the books of the same name by Dav Pilkey.

Netflix has also confirmed that the third season of Guillermo del Toro’s Trollhunters will be joined by two more series – 3 Below and Wizards – from the Pan’s Labyrinth director to form a trilogy labelled Tales of Arcadia.
