Netflix closes Marvel’s Cage

Netflix’s Marvel series Luke Cage

US streamer Netflix has cancelled its superhero series Luke Cage after two seasons as it continues to tweak its range of Marvel shows.

Netflix and Marvel confirmed the cancellation in a joint statement. The axing comes a week after Netflix hooked another of its Marvel offerings, Iron Fist.

The SVoD service still has Daredevil, the third season of which has just started streaming, Jessica Jones and The Punisher on its list of current Marvel shows. The latter grew out of the main character’s appearance in Daredevil season two.

Marvel’s Defenders, a miniseries spin-off to the individual series involving the protagonists from Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Jessica Jones, landed on Netflix earlier this year.

Luke Cage, which is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, like the other series, tells the story of a former convict with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin who fights crime and corruption as a reformed character.

“Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” the statement read.

Netflix has not been faint-hearted in recent weeks as the digital players continue to jockey for position in the content landscape.

A day after the streamer’s share price jumped 14% thanks to a bumper third quarter performance which saw it garner seven million more subscribers, the company announced it would be ending veteran original Orange is the New Black after its forthcoming seventh season.
