Netflix calls up Spanish Hockey Girls

Netflix has picked up drama series, Las Del Hockey (The Hockey Girls) from Spanish film and television production house Brutal Media.

The Hockey Girls

The Hockey Girls (13×60’) tells the story of a group of young female hockey players who fight to keep the women’s hockey team from being abolished and stars Marc Clotet.

The series was originally produced for the Catalan public broadcaster TV3, and will be available in Catalan, Spanish, or English-language versions.

The Hockey Girls was written by Marta Grau, Nuria Parera, Ona Anglada, Laura Azemar, Natalia Boadas and Marta Vitet, and directed by Kiko Ruiz Calverol and Patricia Fuente.

Netflix has been increasingly focused on original content from Spain, opening a Madrid-based production hub in April and teaming with StudioCanal-backed prodco Bambu Productions.

Back in the US, Netflix has commissioned a comedy sketch show fronted by Iliza Shlesinger which is due to launch in 2020.

The 6×30’ series, produced by Avalon, will shoot in New York and is described as “a secret world filled with absurd characters, insight into the female experience, and irreverent yet poignant social commentary.”

Shlesinger serves as an executive producer alongside Kim Gamble, Kara Baker, David Martin, Richard Allen-Turner, and Jon Thoday.

Stand up comedian Shlesinger has previously worked on four comedy specials for Netflix: Elder Millennial, Confirmed Kills, Freezing Hot, and War Paint.
