First announced in October last year, the initiative aims to discover new talent and concepts from China that can be developed into global hits.

The China Tales Incubator is jointly funded by Nelvana, WeKids and Canada-based animation software company Toon Boom and is now open for submissions online in either Mandarin or English until July 6.

Submissions, which should be comedic, character-driven concepts for kids aged 2-5 and 6-11, will be evaluated by September 30 and must include a working title, target demo, proposed format, summary and a maximum of five illustrations.

The winning concept will be put into development with the partnering companies, with the goal of creating a pitch bible and an animation test or trailer to take to the international market for distribution, licensing and merchandising.

Nelvana, WeKids and Toon Boom Animation will host China Tales Incubator Workshops in Hangzhou, Suzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen between April 26 and May 11.

“China holds tremendous untapped potential in the international animation market and we’re keen to unearth new talent through the China Tales Incubator competition,” said Scott Dyer, president of Nelvana.
