Nelvana hunts original Chinese IP

MIPCOM: Corus Entertainment-owned Nelvana has linked up with Chinese distribution firm WeKids to launch a kids’ animation incubator competition in China.

Jointly funded by Nelvana, WeKids and Canada-based animation software company Toon Boom, the initiative aims to discover new talent and concepts from China that can be developed into global hits.

The winning concepts will secure development deals with Nelvana, WeKids and Toon Boom. Submissions in the form of animated shorts will be accepted as of January 2018. Further details will be announced at a later date.

“Expanding our presence in China is a priority for Nelvana, and this continued partnership is the right step as we grow our footprint in the international market. We are committed to bringing original and engaging content to our Chinese fans through this inspiring and creative competition,” said Scott Dyer, president ofNelvana.

It follows WeKids founder and CEO Sean Chu working with Nelvana to distribute the latter firm’s programming in China, which has resulted in shows such as Franklin & Friends airing on the CCTV Kids Channel.
