Hamilton is being coproduced by Dramacorp, the Swedish prodco Nebout launched with Beta Films’ Jan Mojto in April, and Swedish IP company IRLC.

Mia Sohlman, who created and produced SVT’s hit political thriller Blue Eyes and joined Dramacorp in June, will exec produce the show alongside Nebout.

Petter S Rosenlund, head writer of NRK’s thriller The Heavy Water War (called Saboteurs in the UK), has been attached as head writer and the show will feature English as well as other languages.

The Hamilton books focus on a Swedish intelligence officer who trains with the US Navy and then becomes part of an illegal black-ops cell within the Swedish military.

Guillou was previously imprisoned for espionage after exposing a similar illegal spy organisation within the Swedish military, with the books based on those experiences. A number of theatrical features and miniseries have been produced based on the Hamilton books, including movies in 1989 and 1992.

Discussions are now under way with Swedish and international broadcast and coproduction partners, with further details set to follow before Mipcom next month.

Nebout said: “With this project, we’re moving beyond the classic Nordic noir crime genre into a contemporary, chaotic world of espionage, paranoia and the geopolitical power game that is being played anew between Scandinavia, Russia and the US – a Cold War 2.0, if you like, but without the ideology.”

Jens Alex, MD at IRLC, added: “Jan Guillou’s Hamilton is one of the most powerful Scandinavian literary rights ever. We’re thrilled to team up with Dramacorp on this fantastic project, which will bring a legendary character to both Nordic and international audiences.”
