NBCU names streamer, unveils line-up

NBCU took The Office away from rival streamer Netflix

NBCUniversal (NBCU) has christened its forthcoming streaming service Peacock and announced reboots of Battlestar Galactica and Saved By The Bell to sit alongside its acquisition of The Office.

Peacock will launch next April with 15,000 hours of content, NBCU announced today, as the latest big streaming player to compete with Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu and the forthcoming HBO Max and Disney+ services.

NBCU had already announced a high-profile deal to take The Office away from Netflix for the new service and today unveiled a slate of originals and acquisitions to run alongside it from launch.

In drama, Chad Hamilton is executive producing a Battlestar Galactica reboot from Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail, while a previously announced TV adaptation of Brave New World is also included on the slate.

Original drama Dr Death, which tells the true story of Dr Christopher Duntsch, who maimed and killed patients coming in for routine spinal surgeries, has been commissioned based on a hit podcast of the same name. Alex Baldwin has been cast as a neurosurgeon determined to stop Duntsch.

In comedy, classics Saved By The Bell and Punky Brewster will be revived alongside the debut of original series Rutherford Falls, about a small New York State town that becomes embroiled in an argument over an historical statue. The Good Place creator Mike Shur is behind that series which will be produced by and star Ed Helms.

Peacock will also be the exclusive streaming home to Universal TV-produced Parks & Recreation, which has aired for seven seasons on US broadcast network NBC and is currently available via Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video.

The Amber Ruffin Show is a late-night talkshow fronted by the comedian and produced by Universal Television.

Other library titles available at launch will include former NBC shows Cheers, Frasier, Friday Night Lights, Will & Grace and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Subscription prices and an exact launch date have not been confirmed.
