NBCU catches Korean formats

NBCUniversal (NBCU) Formats has picked up the rights to two entertainment formats from South Korea, including a singing reality show featuring K-pop celebrities.

Hidden Singer, currently in its third season on Korean net JTBC, sees five fans perform behind closed doors alongside their favourite popstars.

After each song the studio audience votes off the performer who sounds least like the famous singer, until the true superstar or an impersonator is revealed.

NBCU Formats has also added Where Are We Going Dad?, which takes five celebrities and their children on a short excursion to idyllic but desolate destinations to compete against each other in a series of tasks.

It has already been sold into China, where it airs on Hunan Television, and has also led to a spin-off movie.

NBC in the US recently greenlit a version of Grandpas Over Flowers, which airs on Korean cablenet TVN.

Hidden Singer and Where Are We Going Dad? are both part of NBCU Formats’ Mipcom slate, along with Untying The Knot, which follows couples who are unable to come to an agreement about their estate during divorce, and reality dating format The Singles Project.

Elsewhere, Escape Club, which aired on E!, sees 12 people trying to secure a year of financial freedom by completing tasks on a deserted island while Syfy’s competition format Wizard Wars challenges a new team of magicians each week to create illusions.

NBCU Formats is the international sales division for all formats created within the production and broadcast divisions of NBCU.
