NBC teams with quiz app

NBC in the US has ordered a studio-based quizshow that sees contestants battle for cash against viewers using an app at home.

QuizUp has been developed by NBC and gaming studio Plain Vanilla Corp, which creates trivia apps that it claims have attracted more than 75 million users worldwide.

The 10-episode first season has been created by Jeff Apploff and Wes Kauble, and is being produced by Universal Television and Apploff Entertainment.

It follows contestants in the studio who must win eight trivia battle against different competitors playing from home to win up to US$1m. If any of the at-home players win their battle, they’ll win the money allocated to that round. Qualification for the show will come via the QuizUp app.

The format will be unveiled by NBCUniversal International Formats at Mipcom next week.

“At a time when the TV industry is crying out for new and innovative entertainment formats, it makes sense for us to start seeking out potential content in that space,” said Yvonne Pilkington, senior VP of format sales and production at NBCUniversal International Studios.
