Nat Geo raises Concordia special

National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) has commissioned UK production firm Windfall Films to make a one-off documentary about the stricken cruise ship Costa Concordia.

The Raising of the Costa Concordia follows the recovery of the world’s biggest shipwreck and the great feats of engineering that surrounded the endeavour.

Windfall’s cameras have been following the 500 engineers, divers, welders and crane operators that have been working on raising the ship since it struck rocks near the island of Giglio, Italy in January 2012 and capsized, killing 32 passengers.

Colin Campbell will direct and produce, while Carlo Massarella will exec produce for Windfall Films, part of the superindie Argonon. The special will air on NGCI later this month.

Rival broadcaster Discovery Networks International previously commissioned Inside Raising Concordia from Endemol-owned prodco Darlow Smithson.
