National Geographic Channel will release its climate-change documentary Before the Flood for free on platforms including Facebook and Amazon on Sunday.

The “unprecedented and historic” release strategy is part of Nat Geo’s ambition to make climate change front of mind for voters before the US presidential election next month, the broadcaster said.

It will see the 90-minute doc, which features Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, made available globally for free via iTunes, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Sony PlayStation and Google Play from October 30 to November 6.

It will also be available for free via Natgeotv.com and Nat Geo TV apps on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, Roku, Android phones, Xbox One and 360, and Samsung Connected TVs.

Meanwhile, the global television premiere takes place on Nat Geo channels on October 30 in 171 countries and 45 languages.

In the film, DiCaprio interviews individuals including president Barack Obama and Pope Francis, as well as NASA researchers, forest conservationists and scientists, to determine what can be done today and in the future to make our political systems and economies environmentally friendly.

“In our minds, there is no more important story to tell, no more important issue facing our planet than that of climate change,” said Courteney Monroe, CEO of National Geographic Global Networks.

DiCaprio added: “There is no greater threat to the future of our society than climate change, and it must be a top issue for voters this election season.”

In addition, at the end of the film, viewers will get a five-minute sneak peek at Mars, from executive producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, before it premieres globally on November 13.
