MTV raids the vaults with new studio

Viacom-owned MTV is launching a production unit to focus on developing reboots of classic properties such as Daria for SVoD services and broadcasters.

MTV Studios will develop and produce a full slate with a focus on series, franchises and spin-offs that span MTV’s 35-year history.

The youth-skewing network claims one of the largest libraries of young adult series and franchises in TV history, with more than 200 titles.

Its initial slate will include Daria & Jodie (working title), a reimagined version of feminist animated cult classic Daria from writer Grace Edwards (Inside Amy Schumer), and a live-action remake of anime series Aeon Flux from Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis.

Others include new versions of reality series The Real World, from MTV Studios and Bunim/Murray Productions, and makeover series Made.

The Valley (working title), meanwhile, is a documentary series inspired by The Hills that follows the love lives of a group of 20-somethings in a town on the US-Mexico border.

MTV’s Straight Up Ghosted follows young people trying to reconnect with lost friends, lovers and family members and confront them about why they have been ‘ghosted’ online.

“With MTV Studios, we are for the first time ever opening up this vault beyond our own platforms to reimagine the franchises with new partners,” said Chris McCarthy, president of MTV.
