MTV moves into gaming

MTV Networks Europe is expanding its activities into TV gaming, after buying a 50% stake in French channel Game One owned by Paris-based outfit Atari.

The 24-hour French language service currently beams into 3.5 Gallic homes with an interactive schedule of news, reviews, competitions and tips all geared towards gaming.

Game One will now be joining MTV's 36 strong bouquet which includes MTV, VH1, TMF and Nickelodeon channels in Europe.

Given the net's core audience of 15-34, Game One is well suited to the MTV brand. {Videogames and home entertainment are integral to European youth culture, so we see opportunities to expand Game One to other markets, as a natural complement to our stable of youth and music brands,{ said Simon Guild, ceo of MTV Networks Europe.

French digital platform CanalSatellite is also tapping into the potential revenue streams afforded by interactivity. In association with 1,2,3 Multimedia and Universal Music For Mobile, CanalSatellite has launched dedicated interactive channel 1.2.3 Sat TV.

Available to the platform's 2m subscribers, the new net offers entertainment-related content. Viewers can participate via SMS or interactive voice server.
