MotorTrend revs up Top Gear US

Top Gear USA previously aired on A+E Networks’ History and BBC America

MIPTV: Discovery-backed streamer MotorTrend Group has struck a deal with BBC Studios (BBCS) that will see it produce a new US version of motoring format Top Gear and make it home to the UK show’s library.

The multi-year agreement will give MotorTrend more than 200 episodes of Top Gear UK (seasons two to 25) from June 4, with the streamer also coproducing a new US version of the show with BBCS.

The US version of the show was previously cancelled by A+E Networks’ History channel before being revived in 2017 by BBC America, which remains a coproduction partner on the UK show.

The latest deal, which follows BBCS’s far-reaching deal with Discovery on a new global streamer, will also see MotorTrend becoming the exclusive home in the US and Canada to more than 60 compilations and specials as well as future UK seasons.

“We’re thrilled to embrace one of our favourite shows and give audiences unprecedented access to hundreds of hours of Top Gear UK, while also adding some uniquely MotorTrend touches to the franchise,” said Alex Wellen, global president and general manager of MotorTrend Group.

Wellen described the show’s “brand, stories and personalities” as “a natural fit for MotorTrend as we continue our mission to embrace, entertain and empower the motoring world.”

Matt Forde, MD of international production and formats a BBCS, added: “We look forward to working with the MotorTrend team to bring the new US version to new and returning fans.”
